Society may have reached a new height in sophistication. I hold this suspicion because of a recent lamp incident. There is a rental home in Woy Woy with a very decadent quirk. The house has original timber floors, an ornate retired fireplace, two bedrooms and an optimistic east facing view across the Broadwater. One of the bedrooms is complicit in a spectacularly refined piece of socially constructed self deception. The room has a big comfy bed, two side tables, two lamps and a ceiling fan. It feels like a real nice coastal holiday room. The lamps though don’t have light bulbs, nor are they plugged in. They aren’t plugged in because the room doesn’t have any power points. This room has evolved beyond lamps that simply provide light for the eyes. This room provides the psychological impression of potential illumination. And at the end of another long year, isn’t that what we all really need?
