As we cascade through life there are occasional interjections which can create a moment of pause; darting events and observations which can still physical activity, and halt a mental stampede. Grand or small, inspiring or disquieting; sometimes an interjection strikes sharp into life with clarity, purpose and passion. One such interrupting event is the observation of another person who is chasing a dream. A moment of exposure to the visceral and living pursuit of a passion has the ability to cast contrast against our day, and our general awareness. A person or group in active, present engagement with their passion provides us with a glancing reminder of the dreams and goals that inhabit our deep corners. There seems to be an inherent response within the psyche when presented with someone who has managed to align their daily struggle to achieve with a passionate belief. Perhaps for a moment the conscious consuming details of our lives are washed aside, and a vista of potential, ambition and life purpose glimmers briefly in the referred light. When a buddy says they are moving to Nicaragua to be the ‘Jefe’ at a restaurant - we wonder, have I always wanted to live in another country? If a friend runs a business taking commissions to knit clothes and decorations for public statues - we ask ourselves, could my crazy business ideas work? When a group of suit wearing office types sacrifice their time and bodies to ride pushbikes from Brisbane to Sydney for a charitable foundation - we consider, what should I lay down for my beliefs? These glimpses of open hearted and courageous pursuits of passion seem to encourage the ambitious spirit inside. For a moment there is a chance to see into our slightly hidden thoughts, an opportunity to feel a passion shift itself and wriggle in the deep.
This week a collection of passionate individuals are chasing a dream of a better life for people living with Motor Neurone Disease. The Million Meters ride, organised by the MND and ME Foundation arrives in Manly on Saturday. The ride set out from Brisbane one week ago. For the individuals on the ride it is an act of love, memory and respect for a friend, and an act of passion for the future. A clear interjection into the expected events of the day. Perhaps a brief observation of this pursuit of a passion can provide us all with a moment to consider, to believe, and possibly to begin.
